Custom Basketball Uniforms: Design and Ordering Guide

Custom basketball uniforms start with three decisions: reversible or separate home and away sets, the number and name rules your league follows, and the fabric. Send a roster with each player's size, number and name, approve a physical sample, then go to bulk.

Custom basketball uniforms start with three decisions: reversible or separate home and away sets, the number and name rules your league follows, and the fabric. Send a roster with each player's size, number and name, approve a physical sample, then go to bulk. At Oversky most designs start at 50 pieces per style and colour, with bulk typically 4-6 weeks after sample approval.

What do basketball uniform rules require?

Basketball rules focus on colour and numbers. Under FIBA rules, shirts and shorts must share the same dominant colour front and back, and numbers must be clearly visible on the front and back in a colour that contrasts with the shirt.

FIBA's 2026 rule changes, in force from 1 October 2026, restate the matching dominant colour rule for shirts and shorts, confirm that all-in-one uniforms are permitted, and remove the requirement for socks to be visible. Competitions built on FIBA rules allow numbers 0, 00 and 1 to 99, with no two team-mates sharing a number.

School and youth leagues may follow different codes. In US high schools, for example, the NFHS rules were changed so that the number can no longer be the same colour as the jersey, and NFHS uses a narrower set of legal numbers. Always ask your league for its current uniform rules and send them with your brief.

Should you choose reversible basketball uniforms?

Choose reversible uniforms when you want two colours in one garment and a lower cost per player; choose separate home and away sets when you want different designs or heavier decoration on each.

Reversible jerseys are usually two layers of mesh sewn together, with numbers on both sides. Check that the print on one side does not show through to the other, especially with dark colours behind light numbers.

Which fabric is best for basketball jerseys?

Most basketball jerseys use polyester mesh or interlock. Mesh breathes well and suits hot halls and reversible builds; interlock is smoother, takes fine print detail cleanly and feels more like a modern pro jersey.

Things to specify:

  • Fabric type and weight for jersey and shorts, or a feel you want to match.
  • Side panels in a more open mesh for ventilation.
  • Binding: rib or self-fabric binding at the neck and armholes.
  • Shorts: length, inseam, waistband and whether you want side pockets.

For all-over designs, sublimated polyester is the usual choice, because the colour goes into the fibre and the jersey stays light. Our sublimation vs screen printing guide compares decoration methods, and the fabric guide explains mesh and interlock options.

How do you brief names and numbers?

Brief names and numbers with a roster, one line per player. Each line should give the player's name as it should appear, their number, jersey size and shorts size.

Then specify the details once for the whole team:

  1. Number positions: front, back and, if your league allows, shorts.
  2. Number heights to meet your league's minimums.
  3. Font and outline: style, colour and any border colour.
  4. Name position: above or below the back number, and the maximum length.
  5. Decoration method: sublimated, heat-applied or tackle twill.

Double-check the roster before the sample is approved. Spelling mistakes and duplicated numbers in the list are easy to miss, and every line is produced exactly as written.

How long does a custom basketball uniform order take?

Plan for about seven to nine weeks from brief to dispatch, plus shipping. At Oversky the specification is confirmed in 2-3 days, the sample usually leaves the factory in 7-10 working days once artwork, measurements and materials are confirmed, and bulk typically takes 4-6 weeks after sample approval and the 30% deposit.

During production, our checks cover first-piece measurements, print and number placement against the artwork, colour consistency across the batch and a final measurement audit with a quantity count before packing.

How can you design basketball uniforms before ordering?

The fastest way to settle a design is to try colourways and layouts visually before you brief. Our Team Kit Designer lets you experiment with colours and panels, and you can send the result with your enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

What numbers are allowed on basketball jerseys?

Under FIBA-based rules, numbers 0, 00 and 1 to 99 are allowed, and no two team-mates may wear the same number. School and youth leagues can be stricter: NFHS, for example, uses a narrower list. Check the current rules of your league before you finalise the roster and artwork.

Can reversible basketball jerseys be sublimated?

Yes. Each layer can be sublimated separately before the jersey is sewn, so both sides can carry full designs, numbers and names. The key is choosing colours and fabric weight that stop the print on one side showing through to the other. Check this on the physical sample.

Do you make basketball shorts and warm-ups to match?

Yes. Shorts, shooting shirts and warm-up tops can be briefed and sampled with the jerseys so colours match across the set. Each garment and colourway counts as its own style for the minimum, so list them separately with their own size breakdowns.

What is the minimum order for custom basketball uniforms?

Most designs start at 50 pieces per style and colour, with sizes mixed within that count. Personalised names and numbers do not split the count when the garment and colourway are the same. Smaller trial runs can be quoted for repeat customers or simple constructions.
